Annual workshop stimulates ideas for EMS growth

Published on

Cooperation between designated EMS member operators was clearly demonstrated at the recent annual EMS Cooperative Global Workshop which focussed on performance improvement. In October, approximately 110 representatives from EMS Cooperative members (50 onsite; 60+ online) shared ideas on how to achieve growth and the way forward for the EMS Cooperative.

Participants at the 2024 EMS Cooperative Workshop

The 2024 EMS Cooperative Workshop was a chance for everyone to share their views. The two-day event included several breakout discussion groups, and, for the first time, integrated an app with questions on EMS which displayed real time responses, from participants across the globe. The interactive activities and instant feedback encouraged and enabled the widest possible input and  helped stimulate further engagement and deepen discussions.

The workshop opened with a session, 'Focusing on what we can control', led by the new EMS Cooperative Board Chair, who reflected on performance and the status of the current Business Plan 2021-2025. The sharing of ideas from all members strengthens the EMS network. Turkey shared their experiences of improving performance and growing volumes. Indonesia's volume growth was due to innovations in sales and a focus on Leg 1 and Leg 2. Sessions further highlighted the value of EMS Cooperative resources, such as EMS SMART, the EMS Operational Guide, i-Care and regional coordination activities.

Recognizing the importance of continuously adapting to the current market, the event included updates on trends and drivers of EMS exchanges and a new market intelligence report. This set the stage for the first discussion where all participants shared their ideas on challenges and opportunities for the service. Day one concluded with a chance to network at a reception and an Historic UPU 150th Anniversary tour, hosted by the UPU's philately expert.

The second day looked toward future actions. The Board member from Singapore shared local performance improvement initiatives, followed by inspiring best practices from France and the UAE. The innovative EMS Twinning project, designed to foster business growth between China (People's Rep.), Japan, and Korea (Rep.), was also highlighted. Further sessions covered advancements in the supply chain and an update on the Edge by GMS project, including Thailand's experience using Edge by GMS for EMS.

The workshop concluded with the sharing of an early draft of Business Plan for 2026-2029, followed by breakout groups that discussed strategies to advance the EMS Cooperative. In closing, the Chair acknowledged the EMS Cooperative’s unique balance between experienced members and new experts bringing fresh EMS insights. It was a productive event, rich with ideas to help grow the service in the future.

Special thanks to industry expert, Derek Osborn for moderating the event. The workshop summary and the presentations are available exclusively to EMS Cooperative members.
